Language is such a big part of who we are that we even like to play with it when we do puzzles. The fun of a lot of word based puzzles like crosswords or word search puzzles is using words in their context but seeing them interact in a pattern at the same time. There is something very satisfying about looking at a grid and using words you know to complete the mystery of how it falls together. Not only are crossword and word search puzzles lots of fun, scientists tell us that they are good for our mental dexterity as well. When you are going on a long trip or just to have plenty of puzzles around the house, there are lots of places to find fun crossword or word search puzzles. The newspaper has them every day and if you go to any convenience store or bookstore, you can find huge books with hundreds of puzzle to keep you happy for hours or days. But have you ever been solving a puzzle and thought, "I bet I could make one of these"? It is when you step over into making your own puzzles for others to enjoy that you really see the elegance of these simple word games. You will also find that the actual construction of a puzzle is not as easy as it looks. The good news is that there are lots of web sites and software programs you can get that allows you to have the fun of coming up with the words and the clues but the software takes over the hard part of molding that into a puzzle. This way, you can let your creativity go wild making really cool puzzles to stump your friends or family and the computer gets the headache of making it all work together. What is also very fun about these programs is you can save a puzzle you are creating to finish later. But when you are done, you can print out as many copies as you want of your puzzle to give to your friends or family to see if they can solve a mysterious puzzle that came from your brain. And once you find your web sites or buy the software, you can make these puzzles as much as you want totally free.

There are lots of situations where creating and printing your own puzzles is a fun activity or a great way to enhance learning. Teachers like to make them because they can become a homework assignment that is also play. If you have friends that love word puzzles, you can make them for each other and see who gets stumped. They even make great party games to help people get started thinking about them of the gathering or as a "getting to know you" activity. However, you use them, you will be the one having the most fun making puzzles, printing them and then watching as others try to solve them. But if you don't "stump" them, don't worry. You can always create another batch of puzzles to try again next time.
